#30: Hayley Joy & the Business of Plus-Sized Fashion

How is it possible that someone who has never been in your situation ends up being the person tasked with creating a solution designed for that specific predicament? That is the question Hayley Joy asked when she discovered that most designers and buyers for plus-sized clothing were young, size 10 women.

Founding Hayley Joy, she started servicing a client base of – as she calls them – “forgotten women”. Starting off making bespoke items herself for a small handful of clients, her brand has grown into to one of the most recognised plus-sized clothing ranges in South Africa. Developing a shape system unique to her line, Hayley has expanded to designing and printing her own fabrics, and has even started applying her design skills to the art world with custom-designed canvas prints.

Despite the challenges she has faced throughout her career, Hayley lives up to her name. Speaking with her is always an absolute joy.

Enjoy!
